As part of our purpose to anchor our vibrant community by providing diverse resources, welcoming spaces, and opportunities for lifelong learning, the Howe Library is undertaking the process of becoming a “Certified Sustainable Library” through the Sustainable Libraries Initiative.
Sustainability is about much more than just the environment or “going green.” Through this process we will be considering the sustainability of facilities, operations, policy, technology, programming, and partnerships — all key aspects in the Howe Library’s long term goals.
Using the Triple Bottom Line definition of sustainability, we are reviewing our policies and practices to ensure they are environmentally sound, socially equitable, and economically feasible.
Libraries can play a key role in building community resilience through equitable access to programs, education, tools, and opportunities. Going through this Sustainable Libraries Certification Process will provide use with the tools, resources, and opportunities to assess our current levels of sustainability – on all three fronts – and discover and implement new ways to work towards a more sustainable future for the Howe Library and our community at large.
