The Ledyard Gallery is the Howe Library’s space for exhibiting original work by artists of the Upper Valley. In addition to exhibits by individual artists, we host annual group exhibits such as the Elden Murray contest, the Hanover High Art Show, and the 55+ Art Show.

Community Through Quilting, quilts by Northern Lights Quilting Guild
On display September 5th through October 28th
Members of the Northern Lights Quilt Guild are delighted to share a small sampling of our quilts with you. Quilting is an artform that has been practiced for many years but we also like to think of it as a way of creating community.
Merriam Webster defines community as: “A group of people living in the same place, sharing common interests, or having the same background and goals. It also means a feeling of fellowship and support among people”.
Community starts with guild members meeting once per month to share our love of quilting in a variety of ways. Those who want to can partake in sewing a designated “Block of the Month”. The names of the creators go into a hat and a lucky winner takes home all the blocks and creates yet another work of art with them. Another favorite communal activity is “show and tell” where we get to admire any quilts that we have completed in the past couple of months.
In addition, we reach out to the broader community. A good example is this Howe Library display! Other activities include sewing demonstrations at Marsh Billings Farm and Museum in Woodstock, VT and at the League of N.H. Craftsmen’s annual craft fair in Newbury, NH. We encourage participation and curiosity at these events.
Perhaps the best example of community through quilting is the guild’s “Comfort Quilts” program. These are quilts that are lovingly made by members who want to see them go out into the community to those in need. Recipients include families who have been displaced due to house fires or other emergencies, Dismas House, The Haven, Family Resource Center, Medical Intensive Care Unit, Bayada Hospice, Foster Children, Jack Byrne Center for Palliative & Hospice Care, Turning Points Network, and many others. They are received with much joy and appreciation.
