Geocaching FAQs
What is geocaching?
Geocaching is an outdoor scavenger hunt wherein participants use a GPS*-enabled device (such as a smart phone or handheld navigator) to find a “cache” located at a specific set of GPS coordinates. Geocaching is a fun, outdoor activity that is enjoyed world wide. * Global Positioning System
What is a cache?
A cache is usually a small box containing a log book, pencil, and small trinkets for prizes. In many cases the cache is in a weather-proof box, hidden outdoors. In other cases it might be indoors in a nondescript container.
How do I get started?
The first step is to download and install the Geocaching® app on your GPS-enabled device. You can find the app in the Apple AppStore or the Google Play store. Set up a free account to begin your adventure.
In the app you can search for caches by location or cache number. It’s fun to see all the caches in the area around you. To get started with the Howe Library Geocache, follow these steps:
- Click the magnifying glass in the top, right corner.
- Select the suitcase icon to search by Geocache
- In the top bar, where it defaults to GC, type in GCAQG07 and hit enter.
- Click on Howe Hideaway to start your adventure.

What if I get stuck?
This is supposed to be a fun summer outing, not a huge challenge. If you get stuck, please ask for help! There are hints available in the app and librarians available in the library. Here are ten tips for newbies looking for their first geocache.
Unofficial BONUS CACHE for the Howe Hideaway!
We get a bonus cache?!
The Howe Library Geocache was intended to be a multi-cache, with the first cache containing clues to subsequent locations where you’d gather data necessary to find the final cache containing the treasure. HOWEVER, it turns out multi-caches don’t show up in the free version of the Geocaching® app, so instead we made it a regular cache with an optional BONUS cache! You can find the bonus cache instructions at the end of the primary Geocache adventure!
What is a multi-cache?
Many geocaches are single-step caches. The GPS coordinates lead directly to the cache. Other caches are more complex. In a multi-cache adventure the GPS coordinates lead to the first cache, which then leads to clues for additional caches.
How do I use the bonus GPS coordinates?
The best way to navigate to the bonus GPS coordinates is by using waypoints in the Geocaching® app. A waypoint is a reference point for a physical location. You can use waypoints to mark important locations such as stages of a Mystery or Multi cache, or to document your starting point at a parking lot or trailhead. In this case we’ll use them to find additional clues to the bonus cache. To add a user waypoint in the Geocaching® app:
- In the cache details page, select Waypoints. (you might need to scroll down a bit)
- Tap the + sign to add a waypoint.
- Enter the coordinates you find on the Bonus Cache instruction sheet.
- Save the waypoint with any name.
- Click the “navigate” icon to navigate to your next stop
