Reading Challenge Ages 0-12
Welcome to Howe Library’s Children’s Summer Reading Challenge for ages 0-12!
How The Reading Challenge Works
- Register at the Children’s Desk and pick up a reading log. T-shirts are available while supplies last.
- Read or listen to a book for your usual amount of time.
- Color in a circle on the log for each reading session.
- After five reading sessions, come back to the library and collect your prize – a free book!
- Keep reading! After five more reading sessions, you’ll be entered into a $25 gift card drawing.
- Ages 0-8 win a $25 gift card to the Montshire Museum Gift Shop.
- Ages 9-12 win a $25 gift card to The Fourth Place.
Don’t want to stop after 10 reading sessions? Keep reading and you’ll receive an additional grand prize drawing entry for every 10 sessions.
Four gift cards are available for each age group and will be drawn on Friday, August 16th.

Teens (Ages 12-19)
Teens Summer Reading Challenge Ages 12-19
This year, Howe Library is hosting a teen-specific Summer Reading Challenge for ages 12-19 alongside a scavenger hunt and exciting summer programming!
Note: 12-year-olds can choose between the Children’s Game and the Teen Game – but cannot do both. The big difference between the games will be the prizes. The book prizes in the teen game are geared towards teens (12-19) and the book prizes for the children’s game are children’s books for ages 0-12). Choose the one that is most appropriate for your reading interests.
Teen Summer Reading Challenge
How to join the challenge:
- Register for the Teen Summer Reading Challenge at the Reference Desk
- Start reading books! Listening to books counts (of course!) and any type of books count. Choose what you like best! If you like Graphic Novels – read those… Nonfiction read that! Even if the book isn’t a teen book / in our YA collection, reading it will count toward your Summer Reading Challenge!
- Track your progress on the game board provided at registration. By reading two books, you will earn a book prize and a raffle ticket to one of our grand prizes! You can keep reading to earn 4 more raffle tickets. You’ll even have the chance to earn two bonus raffle tickets. One for following us at HoweTeen on Instagram and another for completing a book review for a YA book!
Grand prizes will be a gift card to a local establishment. There will be six to choose from: The Nugget, Red Kite Candy, 4U Bubble Tea, The Fourth Place, Still North Books, and My Brigaderio.
Teen Scavenger Hunt
As a bonus Summer game this year we are offering a Teen Scavenger Hunt. The hunt will lead teens through various spaces in the Howe Library.
You can complete the hunt at your own pace so it is a good activity to do when you are in the mood to explore or need to kill a little time in the library.
Register for the hunt at the Reference Desk. When you are finished, return your completed game form to the Reference Desk for a prize!

Adults
Adult Summer Reading Challenge
Our treasure map has three short adventures: which will you choose? Complete one adventure and receive a gift card for a small ice cream at Hanover Scoops. You will also be entered into a raffle for a $100 gift card of your choice from Left Bank Books, The Nugget, or Still North Books & Bar. Treasure maps will be available at the reference desk and online starting June 22.
Howe Library Geocache
Are you up for an adventure? Check out the Howe Library’s Geocache! Start by finding the official cache using the Geocaching app. Then, if you’re up for the challenge, take the BONUS cache instructions and see if you can find the cache hidden inside the library! You’ll have to take a short walk around town first to collect the clues needed to find the indoor cache.
