Adaptive Technology at Howe: Services for People with Special Vision, Hearing or Mobility Needs Magnification: Optelec color video magnifier will enlarge text from books, newspapers, or any printed material. The magnifier also enlarges maps, photographs and other images. Computer software: “JAWS” speech reading software will read Internet pages or documents in a word processing program. Using headphones, a user can hear a voice synthesizer reading the text. “MAGic” screen magnification software enlarges text on the computer screen from 2 to 16 times for low vision users. “BigShot” screen magnification software enlarges text for those who need some magnification, but not as much as “MAGic”. Large type keyboard makes the computer easier to use for those with low vision. Sound amplification: Sound system in the Mayer Room broadcasts sound directly to hearing aids with a ‘T-coil’. The improved amplification will benefit those using the meeting room, as well as people with hearing loss. Mobility: A wheelchair in the front lobby is available for use in the library. |
