POV Screening: Dalya's Other Country

Wednesday, July 26, 2017

This event is a collaboration with POV, PBS' award-winning nonfiction film series. Learn more at: http://www.pbs.org/pov/.

This event is cosponsored with the Upper Valley Refugee Working Group.

Join us for a screening of the POV documentary, Dalya's Other Country, directed by Julia Meltzer.  A discussion led by members of the Upper Valley Refugee Support Group will follow the documentary.

Dalya's Other Country tells the nuanced story of members of a family displaced by the Syrian conflict who are remaking themselves after the parents separate. Effervescent teen Dalya goes to Catholic high school and her mother, Rudayna, enrolls in college as they both walk the line between their Muslim values and the new world in which they find themselves.

Starting in 2013, the film follows Dalya and her mother through what seems at first a typical immigration experience. They adjust to unfamiliar American ways, even as they maintain the cultural and religious traditions that sustain them. However, they grow tense and anxious as the 2016 presidential campaign unfolds and candidate Donald Trump calls for restrictions on Muslim immigrants.

The Upper Valley Refugee Working Group shares information and opportunities to welcome refugees and new Americans.  We meet to provide mutual encouragement for people involved in a variety of activities, advocacy work and outreach for and with refugees in NH and VT.

POV (a cinema term for "point of view") is television's longest-running showcase for independent non-fiction films. POV premieres 14-16 of the best, boldest and most innovative programs every year on PBS. Since 1988, POV has presented over 400 films to public television audiences across the country. POV films are known for their intimacy, their unforgettable storytelling and their timeliness, putting a human face on contemporary social issues. Learn more at http://www.pbs.org/pov
