Cine Salon Spring 2010: Nothing But Time: 15 Days of Dance: The Making of Ghost Light: Day 3, Morning / Sappho

Impressions on the Art of the Cinematograph by Bruce Posner
Mondays at 7:00 PM unless noted

“Nothing But Time: Films in New England Library Basements”

Our 2010 spring film series is devoted to encore screenings of some of the most memorable films that I have presented during the past 30 years in New England library basements - the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts (Cambridge), Currier Museum of Art (Manchester), Fiske Free Library (Claremont), Loew Auditorium-Hood Museum of Art, Pavilion Auditorium (Montpelier), Sawyer Free Library (Gloucester), and, of course, the Ciné Salon at the Howe Library. For reasons known only to each building’s planners and architects, such as Le Corbusier and Jose Luis Sert at Harvard, these subterranean refuges seem to be favored setting for “media rooms” that in turn have functioned as our ersatz art cinemas. —Bruce Posner

April 19: 15 Days of Dance: The Making of Ghost Light: Day 3, Morning / Sappho

The Making of Ghost Light, Day 3, Morning, is a feature-length excerpt from the new 18-hour documentary that intimately follows rehearsals by American Ballet Theater choreographer Brian Reeder and his dancers. Elliot Caplan, acclaimed director of Caged/Cunningham (1991), meticulously records the ballet-making process and offers us "an extended rumination on the making of art." (Ann Murphy) Sappho is a simply told biography of the great 6th century B.C poet, centered on her poetry but extending beyond her life to the legend that has expanded for centuries.
